In the world of elite sport and performance psychology we tend to make the distinction between outcome, performance and process.
Outcome is the business result, e.g. revenue, profit or market share. In sport this is winning the match, the race or tournament. It’s what we’re competing for, but it’s not under our control
You’ll hear Olympic athletes saying that they were focused on the process; on giving themselves the best possible platform to get the best result. Rarely does focusing on winning result in winning.
